π Big Tech & Startup
CAAD's recent report is causing quite a stir, suggesting that some of the biggest names in the tech industry may not be doing enough to combat climate misinformation. Released during the vibrant backdrop of Climate Week NYC, this comprehensive study delved deep into the policies and practices of tech titans like Meta, Pinterest, TikTok, YouTube, and X. While Pinterest deserves applause for its proactive approach, scoring the highest, X, unfortunately, finds itself at the bottom of the list. In this rapidly evolving digital era, the onus is on both platforms and regulators to step up. It's imperative that they work collaboratively to ensure that the vast online community is well-informed and aligned on the pressing climate issues of our time.
π Science & Futuristic Tech
Dinosaur extinction theories have long been dominated by two dramatic scenarios: a massive asteroid impact or colossal volcanic eruptions. A recent report suggests that both might have played a role in the demise of the dinosaurs. While the 6-mile-wide asteroid that hit the YucatΓ‘n Peninsula 66 million years ago undoubtedly caused catastrophic damage, the Deccan Traps in India were spewing vast amounts of carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide for 300,000 years before the asteroid's impact and continued for another 500,000 years after. This volcanic activity created a climatic seesaw, warming the planet with CO2 and cooling it with SO2. A new machine-learning model supports the theory that the volcanic emissions alone could have caused the environmental conditions leading to the dinosaurs' extinction. However, the asteroid's impact, which caused immediate devastation and possibly triggered more volcanic activity, cannot be discounted. The debate continues, but the consensus is shifting towards a combined asteroid-volcanic theory, adding depth to our understanding of this ancient mass extinction event.
