Hey 👋
It’s finally over - the longest month of the year (or so it feels!)
Made Tech is pleased to sponsor this week’s Haystack Digest!
They would like you to guess whether or not this spiel was written by ChatGPT:
Made Tech helps the public sector use technology to make a positive impact on society - fast. They do this by building small agile teams of passionate digitally-minded people from all over the country. They train new talent through their engineering and design academies and are on the lookout for people who share their mission to use technology to make a positive difference in the world. Plus they hold an annual bake-off with actual wooden spoons as prizes.
Currently hiring Senior Software Engineers and Software Engineers in Swansea and multiple other locations! Check out these roles and more on the Haystack app 📲
🚀 Big Tech & Startups
Not much has changed since the year 2022…
Big tech companies are all following suit, including Microsoft, as they are set for even more tech layoffs. But, it’s not all doom and gloom as it appears 👇
Microsoft hired 40,000 people in the space of a year. So even after the recent layoffs, it’s still up 30,000 employees
Meta hired more than 26,000 employees in 2020 and 2021; it recently cut 11,000 jobs, meaning they still have more than half of their recent hires
Priorities are shifting for these big tech companies, meaning that they’ll cut costs where necessary but make key hires in the areas of interest.
🔭 Science & Futuristic Tech
NASA’s Martian rover has finished hoarding.
The focus of the mission was to look for signs of ancient microbial life and gather samples of the Martian environment. NASA’s Perseverance first landed on Mars in February 2021. Since then it has deposited 10 sample tubes onto the surface of Mars, with hopes to return the primary samples back to Earth in the future.
The focus of the main mission now turns to the future reclamation of the Martian samples. But, that could take a while - NASA currently estimates that the sample retrieval lander will land by 2028 at the earliest and that the collected samples won’t arrive on Earth until at least 2033!
So, we’ve got a long time to wait for the results…
