🚀 Big Tech & Startup
Threads, the new app from Meta, has just overtaken ChatGPT’s record to become the fastest-growing online platform in history.
Of course, it’s links to fellow Meta-owned app Instagram have played a significant role in this. However, the numbers are still impressive - within two hours of it’s launch it had acquired 2 million users, and two days later sign-ups surpassed 70 million. For comparison, Instagram took 15 months to reach 30 million downloads, and ChatGPT sat at 10 million after a week.
It will come as no surprise that an app labelled by many as a ‘Twitter-killer’ has elicited a response from Twitter CEO Elon Musk. In fact, just hours after Thread’s launch, X-Corp’s legal team sent a letter to Zuckerberg expressing “serious concerns that Meta has engaged in systematic, will, and unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property”. In response, a Meta spokesperson reportedly posted: “No one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee — that’s just not a thing.”
🔭 Science & Futuristic Tech
Scientists believe they are on the brink of proving the Earth has entered a new era for the first time in 11,700 years with the advent of the Anthropocene epoch, or the point when humanity’s influence on the planet’s geology became irreversible.
A small lake in an area outside Toronto has been identified as the site to provide the formal reference point for the new era, after extensive research by the international Anthropocene Working Group, made up of geologists and historical scientists.
The group was formed in 2009 and set itself the challenge of defining and establishing the Anthropocene era in relation to Earth’s 4.6bn-year timeline. The current Holocene epoch began at the end of the last ice age.
