🚀 Big Tech & Startups

First, they lost subscribers, now they’re losing staff.
Netflix is cutting ties (and costs) as they say goodbye to 150 employees - mostly from their US offices. 👋 The striking move comes after the tech giant announced that they expect to lose millions of subscribers within the first half of 2022.
Netflix has previously mentioned that they have plans to crack down on password sharing between households too, so be prepared to say goodbye to stealing your family/friend’s Netflix login. 😢
And, following in their footsteps is the buy now pay later firm, Klarna. The Swedish company has blamed a combination of factors on why it’s binning around 700 of its employees, including the rise in the cost of living and yet again the war against Ukraine!

When we think about food, we rarely think of how it’s made/produced. 🤔
There are certain laws which must be abided by in the food production industry, but since leaving the EU, the UK has been able to set its own rules - meaning that gene-edited crops are now a thing in England. The techniques used to produce gene-edited crops were previously banned but production has been sped up to help guarantee British food supplies.
So what is gene editing? ⬇️
Gene editing is a relatively recent technology that involves switching genes on and off by snipping out a small section of the plant's DNA.
A new bill is set to pass through Parliament soon and, if approved, we could be purchasing some of the first gene-edited crops from supermarket shelves. 🍅

Meet Ruth, a Self-Taught Software Engineer and Trans Woman 🏳️⚧️
I’m a trans woman, and began my transition back in 2012. Before then, I was very concerned about the impact that transitioning might have on my career - whereas in fact the converse was true - I found it made me far happier in work, and a better team player.
I’ve found software engineering to be a great environment to work in for someone who is transitioning - all the companies I have worked for since starting my transition have been welcoming and accepting, and I have not experienced any problems.
Conversely, I’ve found huge benefits from being able to work as my true self - especially around feeling happier and more engaged at work.
Read more of Ruth’s journey in our Developer Stories series.

Is Node.js still relevant and worth learning?
